| Main activity | The International Water Assessment Centre (IWAC) is a collaborative centre for integrated water resources management, established in 2000 by the decision of the Meeting of the Parties to the Convention on the Protection and Use of Transboundary Watercourses and International Lakes (Water Convention) on its second session. IWAC's mission is to is to promote the practical implementation of the Water Convention.
IWAC’s activities include the following:
- Provide support to countries to implement or accede to the Convention and, as relevant, its Protocol on Water and Health.
- Support the implementation of soft law tools, such as guidelines and recommendations, developed under the Convention and, as relevant, under the Protocol on Water and Health, including through pilot projects and other projects on the ground.
- Organize training courses, workshops and seminars, and/or render assistance to countries and joint bodies in conducting such events to improve the sustainable management of transboundary water resources and, as relevant, under the Protocol.
- Assist the Convention secretariat, as appropriate, in carrying out its mandated work and the activities in the Convention’s and, as relevant, Protocol’s programme of work.
- Promote the exchange of expertise and good practices related to the work under the Convention and, as relevant, the Protocol.
- Gather and disseminate information related to the Convention and, as relevant, the Protocol.
- Upon request, carry out and/or coordinate studies related to the work under the Convention and, as relevant, the Protocol.
- Upon request, collect, process, analyse, publish and disseminate data and information related to the management of transboundary water resources and, as relevant, water and health.
- Participate in and contribute to the activities under the Convention and, as relevant, under the Protocol.
- Draw-up project proposals to support the implementation of the Convention and, as relevant the Protocol, in its area of expertise and in consultation with the Convention Bureau and the secretariat, and ensure their effective implementation.
